Bernd Arnold (Documentary Photographer)
Bernd was born 1961 in Cologne/Germany. During his studies of Photography and Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund he already had the opportunity to work for daily newspapers and the magazines Stern and ZEITmagazin.
For years Bernd has been dealing with power and rituals of public events. He started his research about behavioural attitudes in different contexts of society with a documentation of catholic ceremonies in cologne (compiled in the book DAS KÖLNER HEIL). Following topics were the politicians´ strategies of a medium-effective self-production during the German democratic election campaigns (compiled in the book Wahl Kampf Ritual) and the world economic summit. Further on he examined the defining rituals in the world of pimps, prostitutes and nightlife as well as the production of television sceneries bringing up the question: Is our world a telly? The photographic works of „Power and Ritual“ and other have already been shown in many national and international exhibitions. Another focus of interest lies on portrait photography.
His work as an artist and as a freelance photographer is published in German and international print media like Die Welt, Die Zeit, Focus, GEO, Greenpeace, Neue Züricher Zeitung, NRC Handesblad), Spiegel, Stern, taz, ZEITmagazin and many others.
He is represented by the photo agency VISUM in Hamburg.
