Facing Reality

1° classified

Author: Amos Nachoum (US)

Location: Pleneau Island, Antarctic peninsula

Description: A leopard seal got into a lagoon just before low tide. The seal was hiding, waiting to ambush young penguins as they got closer. When a penguin got close enough, the seal moved extremely fast and caught the penguin by its feet dragging it to the open water. I was following parallel to the action. The seal released the penguin twice and the terrified penguin succeeded in escaping, but the seal continued chasing after it, and on the third attempt, drowned the penguin and devoured it.

The Hunt

2° classified

Author: Shivang Mehta (IN)

Location: Ranthambore National Park (India)

Description: A young and inexperienced tiger cub attempts to hunt a chital (spotted deer) in Ranthambore National Park, India; but the chital turned out to be too big for this young cub. I captured the moment when the tiger cub was struggling to get the prey down, as his siblings and mother were watching from a distance.

Sperm Whale Herd

3° classified

Author: Tony Wu (JP)

Location: Sri Lanka

Description: The sperm whales pictured here had just emerged from milling around in a gigantic cluster, with many of the whales defecating to such an extent that the water was opaque with secretions. This scene was part of a large, multi-day aggregation comprising hundreds, perhaps thousands of whales.

Arctic Fox

3° classified

Author: Peter Mather (CA)

Location: Alaska's North Slope (USA)

Description: I encountered this fox scavenging a Caribou's carcass on the coastal plains of Alaska's Arctic. I spent two hours slowly approaching it until I took this picture from six feet away, as she finished her meal. It was a surreal and unforgettable experience and a rare opportunity to be accepted into a wild animal's existence for a few special hours.

Hanging in the Primary Forest

Honorable Mention

Author: Marco Gaiotti (IT)

Location: Gunung Leuser National Park (Indonesia)

Description: A wild Sumatran orangutan in Gunung Leuser National Park, in Northern Sumatra. This species is critically endangered according to the IUCN red list, due to habitat loss, as a consequence of palm oil exploitation and logging. Less than 3,500 orangutans still survive in the wild. We found this big male while hiking into the primary forest, and after initial mistrust, it became confident allowing me to take some wide-angle shots.

Rhino Silhouette

Honorable Mention

Author: Khaichuin Sim (MY)

Location: Masai Mara National Park (Kenya)

Description: I was taking an early ride out from the camp in Masai Mara National Park, searching for the Great Migration, when I saw a rhino from far away standing beside a tree. The backlight from the early sun was too strong, so I took a silhouette instead.

The Beakful of the Hoopoe

Honorable Mention

Author: Jacopo Rigotti (IT)

Location: Trentino Alto Adige (Italy)

Description: Looking, as usual, for the nests of the most beautiful bird species in Trentino, I unexpectedly saw this hoopoe and I immediately grasped the opportunity to photograph it.

Honorable Mention

Author: Pierluigi Rizzato (IT)

Location: Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)

Description: A hyaena is roaming in the water looking for food on a misty morning. The black and white image conveys a sense of quiet.

Author: Audun Rikardsen (NO)

Location: Skjervoy (Norway)

Description: A killer whale emerges on the surface while hunting in an Arctic Norwegian fjord during the polar night.

Honorable Mention

Author: Milo Angelo Ramella (IT)

Description: A snowy owl takes flight alarmed by the call of another female. This species gives particular care to protecting its own hunting territory.

Honorable Mention

Author: Md Zakirul Mazed Konok (BD)

Location: Mymensingh (Bangladesh)

Description: Unity is the strength, as with teamwork and collaboration with which wonderful things can be achieved. Here this frog wanted to eat the ants, but its own life is at risk in the face of their unity.

Surrounded Bear

Honorable Mention

Author: Roie Galitz (IL)

Location: Kamchatka (Russia)

Description: In this image from above, the Brown Bear is surrounded by salmon in Kurile Lake. The salmon are circling the bear and keeping their distance, just out of his reach.

Mind the Gap

Honorable Mention

Author: Andrew Peacock (AU)

Location: Ross Sea (Antarctica)

Description: A small group of Emperor Penguins huddles near a crack in an ice floe, in a pristine area of the Southern Ocean adjacent to Antarctica, known as the Ross Sea.

Stolen Horn

Honorable Mention

Author: Fahah alenezi (KW)

Location: South Africa

Description: Despite all efforts trying to protect animals from poachers, cases like this one are very common, where horns are stolen from rhinos.

Snowy Owl

Honorable Mention

Author: Andrew Mclachlan (CA)

Location: Thornton, Ontario (Canada)

Description: I live in a rural farming area in south-central Ontario. Every winter, Snowy Owls fly south from the Arctic to spend the winter hunting meadow voles in the farm fields. On this particular day, as blizzard conditions persisted, this Snowy Owl remained hunkered down on the ground. A minimalistic scene was composed, showing the owl within the surrounding habitat, amid the inclement weather.
