Toy Houses

1° classified

Author: Fyodor Savintsev (RU)

Location: Arkhangelsk (Russia)

Description: This picture of some Russian dachas near the city of Arkhangelsk is interesting thanks to the intense contrast between the colors of the houses and the white snow covering the Russian town.

Henningsvær Football Field

2° classified

Author: Misha De-Stroyev (FR)

Location: Henningsvær, Lofoten Islands (Norway)

Description: The football field of Henningsvær, in the beautiful Lofoten Islands in Norway, is considered to be one of the most amazing football fields in Europe, and maybe even in the world.

3° classified

Author: Matt Portch (AU)

Location: Marfa, Texas (USA)

Description: This picture is from the 'Lost America series' and shows a quiet stillness in a forgotten landscape that is somehow ‘on-pause’. Spaces appear frozen in time, their inhabitants, absent or long since departed. Ardently stagnant in their appearance, the images aim to unlock a moment of reflective contemplation and instill a melancholic feeling of familiarity.

4 Hours of Air Traffic

Honorable Mention

Author: Garret Suhrie (US)

Location: San Francisco Int'l, California (USA)

Description: A stacked exposure showing 4 hours of air traffic departing from the N/S runways at SFO. This is one of a series, showing the frenetic pace with which these complex microcosms operate. To achieve this image, I was perched on a mountaintop 2 miles from the runway, with a super-telephoto lens, clicking exposures every time a plane departed.

Harbin Opera House

Honorable Mention

Author: Adrien Barakat (CH)

Location: Harbin (CHINA)

Description: Embedded within Harbin‘s wetlands, the Harbin Opera House was designed by MAD architects in response to the force and spirit of this untamed wilderness and frigid climate in this northern Chinese city.

Save The Last Dance

Honorable Mention

Author: Stefano Barattini (IT)

Location: Grünau (Germany)

Description: A piano telling a story of other times, when in the 1920's couples danced to its notes. Even today, despite the dust covering it, its music echoes in the room, bringing us into an atmosphere full of charm and emotion.

The Stairs

Honorable Mention

Author: Brigitte Schatz (DE)

Location: Berlin

Description: A nice point of view of the exterior of the Karl-Löbe-Haus in Berlin at night. This image is made particularly interesting thanks to the lighting and the pedestrians.

Honorable Mention

Author: Yiorgis Yerolymbos (GR)

Location: Athens (Greece)

Description: I spent a decade documenting Renzo Piano's Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. The images were created during aerial orbits from the site’s tower. Borrowing their name "Orthographs" from Leon Battista Alberti's description of the ground plan; they attempt to record the ephemeral intermediate stages of the construction, and the human effort behind it, before they slowly fade from memory.

Ancient and Modern

Honorable Mention

Author: David Fletcher (GB)

Location: Aix-en-Provence (France)

Description: In Aix-en-Provence, a woman walks past the spaceship-like Conservatoire Darius Milhaud, named after the notable French composer.

Rainy Harbor

Honorable Mention

Author: Ute Scherhag (DE)

Location: Hamburg (Germany)

Description: A beautiful view of the docks of Hamburg, under a grey sky, through the windows of an office building located on the river Elbe.
