Gilles Mingasson grew up in Grenoble, France. He begun traveling and working for magazines, and spent six month bicycling across the Soviet Union in 1990, photographing ordinary people who had lived their entire lives under Communism. He is currently based in Los Angeles.
Gilles shoots editorial stories, long-term documentaries, corporate and commercial assignments, and set photography. Work has taken him all over the U.S., to Latin America, Asia, India, North Africa and Australia. He has photographed six travel books for National Geographic Books.
When not on assignment, Gilles focuses on documentary projects. His pictures of an Eskimo village threatened by climate change were featured at the International Center of Photography in New York, at the Field Museum in Chicago, and exhibited in Europe by the U.N. His documentary work on Latinos in the U.S. won an American Photography Award. He is currently working on a personal project in Tokyo.
Gilles also filmed and co-directed two documentaries, The Executioners (52 minutes), about the people who apply the death penalty in the U.S., and The NASCAR Dads (26 minutes), about the 2008 U.S. elections for France2-Envoyé Spécial. He filmed (With)stand One Night, an award-winning short film.
