Linda Ness, a passionate photographer with a deep love for nature, has a unique journey that shaped her artistic vision.
As a youngster, I travelled extensively, always with my camera in hand, capturing the world around me. Eventually sinking below the waves, my love for creating images below the surface continues to lead me to inspiring, often hard-to-reach places, driven by my mission to showcase the beauty of the natural world.
My creative process began (years ago) with the ‘technically correct’, learning the ways of light, image composure, the ways of breath hold and being in the water, the camera machines. I still strive for it now in more precise ways, but it was such a good grounding for what can come next, which has been a slow emergence of the creative self, where the technical is a tool for creation and you start to play. Perfection is not necessary and probably does not exist. I hope the learnings never end.
It doesn’t matter if I am shooting wave imagery at backline or pelagic action under the surface, there is always a time required to get drawn in to that world, to feel the light and to watch how the action might lend pattern. Spending time with the sea to understand behaviour, perhaps find the order in the chaos. I feel that viewers intuitively tell when you have captured those moments. It might be the glance of a dolphin, or the curl of a wave, it’s fleeting and deeply rewarding to succeed.
To inspire by delight is my mission, as it is in delight that the seeds for care can be found,
