João Rodrigues is a photojournalist, writer, filmmaker and marine biologist specializing in natural history and conservation.
During his professional career that has taken him diving from the icy waters of the Nordic seas to the coral reefs of the tropics, he collaborated on documentaries such as "Europe ́s Wild Islands" from National Geographic Channel, "Blue Planet 2" from BBC, "Oásis-Azores Islands-North Atlantic Ocean" from NHK, "+ ou - 5mètres" from Arte channel and "Life at the Extreme-Deep / Azores" from iTV channel.
He is currently a National Geographic Portugal photojournalist, with numerous publications and director of the Chimera Visuals production company, through which he made the conservation film “Cavalos de Guerra” (“War Horses”) focused on the plight long-snouted and short-snouted sea-horses are facing in what used to be their largest breeding grounds, the Ria Formosa lagoon system.
João Rodrigues collaborates regularly with university research groups, environmental NGOs and governments to reinforce the protection of endangered species worldwide.
Awarded in internationally renowned contests such as the Underwater Photographer of the Year, João's mission is to tell stories of the oceans through what he believes to be one of the most important tools for raising community awareness, the image.
With over a decade of diving experience (Scientific diving; Technical diving; rebreather and cave diving), João Rodrigues is uniquely qualified to create his brand of documentary and photography which informs and creates an emotional connection with wild subjects in extreme conditions. His work delivers audiences to an underwater realm witness by few.
In addition, João Rodrigues in an active conservationist, educating the community through talks at schools, universities, radio and television programs.
