Country: France 🇫🇷

Caroline Brault has an extensive experience of forty years in international photographic agencies and has always worked in multicultural journalistic contexts.

With a background in visual studies she has always valued strong bilingual cooperation between France and Germany, where she studied in her younger days and practiced connoisseur photography. She won the first prize for her ballet photographs at Les saisons de la Danse in 1979, Bagnolet, France. Her practical acquaintance with photography allowed her to step into preeminent photo agencies.

She developed in-depth knowledge of the journalistic scene by being editor and correspondent at Studio X for major press magazines such as FAZ Magazin, die Zeit, Der Spiegel, Springer Group and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
She also participated in documentary and curatorial projects in both France and Germany : multi-site in Erlangen, Hamburg, Hannover, Tübingen in 1987-1988 and Paris (Palais de la Découverte) and multi-site in 2006-2007.

Being editor-in-chief of the archives at the prestigious and world-renowned Agence Gamma (2002-2007), she became in the early 2000s a reference as a picture editor and a researcher. In charge of the rationalization of the photographic collection of Gamma / Stills, Caroline Brault highly contributed to the digital transition and the digitization and distribution of the historic and contemporary collections of the agency, and always with a critical eye on current affairs and world news. She edited many retrospectives and participated in numerous international tributes and chronicles.

More recently, she shared during three years her proactive perspective with the Paris desk of Focus magazine (Hubert Burda Media) as a picture editor.

Caroline Brault’s thorough expertise, sense of diplomacy and negotiation skills naturally led her to consulting and freelancing (since 2013) as a picture editor and iconographer for international press (Bild, Bild am Sonntag of the press group Springer, and Focus of the press group Burda), publishing houses and print distributors (Crystal Galerie, for AFP). She is deeply involved in supporting photographers and photoreporters internationally, and publishing their current work in the fast-paced media that are daily, weekly and monthly press. She participates every year in Visa pour l'Image, the International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan, France.
