Cecilia Bohan has been a photo editor, planner, and curator of compelling images for print and digital platforms at The New York Times for 26 years. She is a strong arts and design professional with experience in range of subjects from architecture and interiors, arts and leisure, international news and sports. She is passionate about finding and nurturing up-and-coming photographers, and was fortunate to have collaborated with several notable photographers at the start of their careers, including Tyler Hicks, Joao Silva, Lynsey Addario, Michael Kamber, and Ashley Gilbertson.
She was the principle editor for assignments in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography in 2002. She has overseen several award-winning projects such as ICP’s Infinity Awards for Photojournalism and Young Photographer; Visa pour l’Image’s Visa d’Or; the Human Rights Press Awards; and numerous Pictures of the Year International and World Press Photo Awards.
She is the Chairman of the Board of the Bronx Documentary Center, whose mission is to share photography, film, and new media with underserved Bronx communities and the cultural community at large.
Cecilia was the first Director of Photography at the International Herald Tribune, in Paris, from 2004 to 2008, and oversaw a staff of picture editors and researchers in Paris and Hong Kong. While in Paris, she curated an exhibition at the National Theatre in London entitled, “ '68: The News, The Stories, The Photographs”. She led a symposium in Tel Aviv and Beit Jalla, which brought Palestinian and Israeli photojournalists together for the first time, and culminated in a traveling exhibition of their work.
She was a juror for the PDN Photo Annual, the Visa pour l’Image Visa d'or Award for Magazine and News Photography in 2003, and the Overseas Press Club in 2004. She has volunteered at numerous recognized portfolio reviews, and has been a strong advocate for emerging photographers.
She has been invited to speak at the Poynter Institute, the National Press Club, the Asian American Journalists Convention, as well as the American Academy of Forensic Science conferences in Kazahkstan and Seattle, bringing an expertise in the science of questioned documents, with regard to news photographs.
Cecilia began her career with an internship at GEO Magazine, and landed her first job at The Associated Press. She later served as Deputy Picture Editor of the National Sports Daily, under Director Neil Leifer. She holds a BA in English Literature with a minor in Fine Art Photography from Washington University in St. Louis.
