Alessia Glaviano is the Brand Visual Director of Vogue Italia and Director of the Photo Vogue Festival. She is widely recognized as a leading figure in international photographic criticism. In addition to curating a series of interviews with the masters of photography for Vogue Italia’s website and Instagram—highly popular among photography enthusiasts and also broadcast on Sky Arte—Glaviano launched Photo Vogue in 2011, an innovative platform that allows users to share their photographs under the curatorial supervision of professional photo editors.
At a time when photography was already ubiquitous online, Glaviano identified the need for a curated, dedicated space. Conceived as a community with a strong sense of belonging, Photo Vogue now counts over 230,000 photographers from all over the world, ranging from amateurs to established professionals. Contributors upload images across genres—from portraiture and reportage to fashion and street photography. By fostering a diverse pool of image-makers worldwide, Photo Vogue has become a model of inclusivity behind the camera. Over the years, many Photo Vogue contributors have grown into some of the most compelling voices in contemporary photography, regularly producing editorials and branded content for major international publications. The mission has always been to champion talent and help shape a richer, more diverse visual industry.
To create a physical and virtual space for the community—one that encourages dialogue on creativity, diversity, and justice in image-making—Milan hosted the first edition of the Photo Vogue Festival in 2016. It became the first consciously curated fashion photography festival dedicated to the intersection of ethics and aesthetics, tied to an influential fashion publication, and engaging the entire city with talks, exhibitions, and photography-related initiatives. The festival’s first four editions (2016–2019) received strong critical and public acclaim.
Beyond her editorial work, Glaviano regularly delivers lectures and participates in conferences. She has been invited as a guest lecturer at institutions such as IED, Bocconi University, and the Politecnico di Milano. She has also served on the juries of prestigious international photography competitions, including World Press Photo and the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à Hyères, and has taken part in numerous portfolio reviews, including the New York Times Portfolio Reviews.
