Fabrizio Bensch was born in the western part of Berlin. He studied political science at the Free University of Berlin and started his career as a photojournalist in 1989, a few months before the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989.

Since 1992, he has worked for the Reuters Newspictures Service based in Berlin, covering breaking news, politics and sports around the world. He covered conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, Israel, the Palestinian territories, Iraq and Afghanistan.
