Maria Mann is a Portugal-based photojournalism consultant, mentor, and public speaker with a long-standing commitment to elevating visual journalism. A trusted motivational photo coach, she guides photographers, editors, and newsrooms in navigating the complex, multi-layered realities of the profession — helping them refine their vision, strengthen their storytelling, and achieve their goals.
Maria is deeply engaged in photojournalism education, curating exhibitions for major institutions, leading workshops worldwide, and consulting across all aspects of the industry, including newsroom integration and editorial coaching.
Her career spans leadership roles at some of the world’s most influential photo agencies. She served as Senior Managing Editor and Director of International Relations at the European Pressphoto Agency (2007–2019). Prior to that, she was Director of Global Current Events at Corbis in Paris, Director of Photography for Agence France-Presse for the Americas, and AFP’s International Photo Editor-in-Chief in Paris.
Maria has directed the IAPA/Knight Foundation Workshops for Advanced Photojournalism in Latin America and has taught in Lithuania, Turkey , China, and at the Pentagon Military Workshops. She edited a two-year project on Ukraine exhibited at the European Union.
Maria has served as a judge for leading international photojournalism competitions, including World Press Photo, UNICEF, Bayeux War Correspondents, Pictures of the Year, and Xinhua’s CHIPP/China.
She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.
