Tom Gilks holds a background in ecology, having studied the subject at university before transitioning into the world of photography and publishing. His career began with roles at picture agencies and as a freelance picture researcher for various magazines.

A significant chapter of his journey involved three years living in East Africa, working as a photographer primarily with NGOs.

In 2016, Tom joined BBC Wildlife Magazine as Picture Editor, where he curates the publication's visual storytelling by selecting the most striking, innovative, and impactful wildlife imagery.
