Between the sheets

Between the sheets
by Joanna Lentini

As our ship crashes into sheets of ice in the northern Arctic Ocean, this kittiwake keeps a keen eye out of for fish which use the sheets for food and protection. Sea ice is a sort of inverted garden and many organisms live within the ice. These small organisms feed juvenile fish which heavily rely on the ice for their survival. With climate change more and more sea ice is disappearing and disrupting the entire food chain in the Arctic.
