Looking For Its Mother

Looking For Its Mother
by Jennifer Hayes

A harp seal pup peers through the sea looking and waiting for its mother to return to the nursery. Harp Seals are born on the sea ice in late February and nursed for 12-15 days before their mother abandons them to mate and migrate back to the Arctic. Pups require stable ice to survive. Rising sea temperatures have resulted in unstable sea ice and years of extreme mortality.
