Julia "Butterfly" Hill

Julia "Butterfly" Hill
by Dan Winters

Julia was a part of a group in northern California that was involved in fighting the logging of old growth redwood trees. She stayed in a 1000 + year old 220’ redwood named “Luna” for over two years without coming down to the earth below. In order to make this photograph I had to hike 8 miles and climb 180 feet up into the tree (using Prusik knots) with my 4x5 camera and lights. I actually made the trip twice in the 738 days she was up there, to photograph her for Rolling Stone Magazine. It was very difficult but the experience of being in the treetop was breathtaking. And I was honored to help bring attention to the cause.
