A pregnancy achieved through IVF with a southern white rhino embryo in a southern white rhino surrogate was bittersweet: the surrogate mother died from a soil-borne bacterial infection. However, it proved that IVF is viable in rhinos and paves the way for bringing the northern white rhinos back from extinction through surrogacy.
