In this fascinating mix of light and energy, western toad tadpoles march from the deep, safe part of Cedar Lake, on Vancouver Island, to the shallow waters to feed on algae growing on floating pond weeds. This species is considered ‘near threatened’ due to the destruction of their habitat and the presence of numerous predators. Shane captured the photo beneath a layer of lily pads, paying attention to not damage the layers of silt and algae covering the lake bed.
