Destiny

Destiny
by Shane Gross

A female and a male pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), their bodies shimmering with brilliant golden reflections, spawn in a river on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, surrounded by a multitude of other salmon. Every year, these fish travel thousands of miles to return to the rivers where they were born, crossing vast oceans in search of food. From July to September, once they reach their destination, their reproductive mission begins: they lay eggs and sperm in a nest, and then die, fulfilling their inevitable destiny. Their bodies nourish the surrounding forest, perpetuating the cycle of life and enriching the ecosystem.
