Waorani: Indigenous Defenders

Waorani: Indigenous Defenders
by Ozge Elif Kizil

Members of the Bameno community, a Baihuaeri Waorani sub-family in Ecuador’s Amazon, continue their daily life in close harmony with their ancestral land and the rhythms of the forest and river. Hunters and gatherers for centuries, they rely on the forest for food, medicine, and spiritual connection, venerating giant kapok trees as sacred and upholding traditions passed down through generations. They hunt only what they need, showing deep respect for the animals they rely on. Despite ongoing threats from deforestation, oil extraction, and modern encroachment, the Waorani continue to resist, adapt, and preserve a way of life deeply connected to the health of the Amazon, serving as guardians of the forest.
